Mount Bute is a small rural locality in the Corangamite Shire of Victoria, situated approximately 190 kilometres south-west of Melbourne near the town of Derrinallum. The locality covers around 66 square kilometres and recorded a population of approximately 61 residents at the 2021 Census. The area is set in the volcanic plains country of western Victoria, with open farmland used for sheep and beef grazing near the distinctive volcanic landforms of the region.
Derrinallum, approximately 10 kilometres to the north, provides a general store and limited community services, while Camperdown (roughly 30 kilometres to the south) offers more comprehensive services. The surrounding landscape is typical of the western Victorian plains, featuring scattered remnant native vegetation and the occasional volcanic cone. A private vehicle is essential as no public transport serves Mount Bute.
