About Mount Tomah
Mount Tomah is a small, elevated rural locality in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, situated on the Bells Line of Road approximately 40 kilometres west of Richmond and around 80 kilometres north-west of Sydney. The locality falls within the Blue Mountains City Council area and sits at an altitude of approximately 1,016 metres above sea level, giving it a cool temperate climate quite distinct from the surrounding lowlands. With a population of just 68 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, Mount Tomah is a quiet, low-density community characterised by small rural holdings and large bush-flanked residential blocks.
Mount Tomah is best known as home to the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, a 28-hectare cool-climate garden that is the highest botanic garden in the Southern Hemisphere and the only one in Australia located within a UNESCO World Heritage Area. The garden features rare and exotic southern hemisphere plants, remnant rainforest, basalt cap forests, and stunning panoramic views, drawing visitors from across the region. Residents enjoy a genuinely rural bush lifestyle surrounded by the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains landscape, with the fruit-growing villages of Bilpin and Berambing nearby along the Bells Line of Road. Access to urban services requires travel to Richmond or Katoomba, making a private vehicle essential for day-to-day life.
Mount Tomah falls under postcode 2758 and is governed by the Blue Mountains Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Macquarie, while state elections fall under the Hawkesbury electorate.
