About Mutitjulu
Mutitjulu is an Aboriginal Australian community located at the eastern base of Uluṟu (Ayers Rock) within the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park in the Northern Territory, approximately 470 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs. Home to the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of this sacred landscape, the community is named after a knee-shaped waterhole at the base of Uluṟu. With a 2021 Census population of 296, Mutitjulu is one of the most remote inhabited localities in Australia, covering just 2.5 square kilometres.
The community maintains deep cultural connections to Uluṟu and the surrounding Tjukurpa (law and spirituality), and Anangu play an active role in managing the national park in partnership with Parks Australia. Essential services including a clinic, school, and community store are located within Mutitjulu. The nearby Ayers Rock Resort village of Yulara, approximately 17 kilometres away, provides additional accommodation, hospitality, and the region's airport (Connellan Airport), making Mutitjulu accessible primarily by air or via the Lasseter Highway.
Mutitjulu falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
