About Muttama
Muttama is a small rural community situated in the Riverina region of New South Wales, within the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council local government area. It lies approximately 24 kilometres south of Cootamundra and 17 kilometres north of Coolac, at an elevation of around 357 metres above sea level. With a 2021 Census population of 140 residents spread across more than 163 square kilometres, Muttama is a sparse and deeply rural locality with a long agricultural history and Aboriginal heritage in its name.
The locality has a rich history tied to gold mining that began in the 1860s, with the discovery of gold at Muttama Reef in 1882 once bringing prosperity to the area. Today, Muttama is a quiet pastoral community surrounded by farmland and native bushland, with Cootamundra serving as the nearest town for schools, shopping, and services. The region is part of the broader Riverina, known for its wide open plains, sheep and wheat farming, and the historic Hume Highway corridor.
Muttama falls under postcode 2722 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wagga Wagga electorate.
