About Nauiyu
Nauiyu (also known as Nauiyu Nambiyu) is a remote Aboriginal community situated on the banks of the Daly River in the Victoria Daly Region of the Northern Territory, approximately 230 kilometres south of Darwin. The community occupies approximately 43 square kilometres of tropical savannah country and is home to around 304 residents according to the 2016 Census. Originally established in the 1950s as a Roman Catholic mission on Mulluk-Mulluk Aboriginal land, Nauiyu is one of the significant Indigenous communities in the Katherine Region, governed under the Victoria Daly Regional Council.
The Daly River is the community's defining natural feature — a large, perennial river system renowned across the Northern Territory for barramundi fishing, making the area a destination for recreational anglers visiting from Darwin and beyond. The surrounding landscape is classic Top End tropical savannah, with monsoon-influenced wet and dry seasons shaping the rhythm of local life. Nauiyu maintains strong connections to traditional culture and country, and the community is self-sufficient in many respects, though Darwin provides the nearest major services including hospitals, shopping centres, and government facilities. Access is via a sealed road, though wet season flooding can occasionally affect access.
Nauiyu falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
