About Nicholson
Nicholson is a very remote locality in the Northern Territory, situated in the Gulf Country approximately 800 kilometres south-east of Darwin and near the Queensland border. Covering an extremely vast area of over 26,000 square kilometres, it recorded a 2021 Census population of 57 residents. The locality is dominated by the Barkly Tableland landscape — vast flat savanna grasslands used for extensive cattle grazing.
This remote cattle country is home to some of Australia's largest pastoral stations. The nearest town of Borroloola is approximately 200 kilometres away, while Mount Isa (QLD) provides the nearest comprehensive services across the border. The locality is traversed by the Savannah Way, a popular touring route. There is no public transport, and roads may be inaccessible during the wet season. The extreme remoteness, big sky landscapes, and rugged outback character define life in this part of the Territory.
Nicholson falls under postcode 862 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barkly electorate.
