About North Yalgogrin

North Yalgogrin is a rural locality in the Bland Shire local government area of New South Wales, situated on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people. It lies approximately 36 kilometres west-north-west of West Wyalong and 18.6 kilometres north of Tallimba on the semi-arid plains of the central-western Riverina. The name derives from the Wiradjuri word "Yalgaa", meaning dried up and hard — a reference to a dead box gum tree — and the 2021 Census recorded a population of 77 people.

The locality has a notable gold-mining heritage: alluvial gold was first discovered around August 1893, sparking the establishment of the village of Yalgogrin (or Yalgogrin North) and a quartz-reef mining boom. A stamper battery was in operation well into the early twentieth century, with sporadic activity continuing until 1954 and the area remaining of interest for gold exploration. Today the surrounding land is devoted to broad-acre grain farming and sheep grazing, and the locality — affectionately known to locals as "The Gog" — retains a quiet agricultural character with minimal services.

North Yalgogrin falls under postcode 2669 and is governed by the Bland Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Riverina, while state elections fall under the Murray electorate.
