About Old Junee
Old Junee is a small historic community in the Riverina region of New South Wales, located within Junee Shire approximately 8 kilometres north-west of Junee and 33 kilometres north of Wagga Wagga. With a population of 254, the locality covers a substantial rural area of around 186 square kilometres, encompassing grazing properties and cropping land typical of the Riverina agricultural belt. The area's history stretches back to the 1860s when it was known as 'Jewnee', predating the establishment of the present town of Junee to its south-east.
Old Junee's most visible landmark is its grain silos, which reflect the locality's ongoing role in the Riverina's cereal cropping industry. The original post office opened in 1862, and the area was renamed Old Junee in 1885 when the railway town of Junee took the name. Junee township — with its historic railway precinct, the Junee Roundhouse Railway Museum, and Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory — is the nearest centre for services, shopping, and schools. Wagga Wagga, the Riverina's largest city, is readily accessible for broader amenities.
Old Junee falls under postcode 2652 and is governed by the Junee Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Riverina, while state elections fall under the Wagga Wagga electorate.
