About Ouse
Ouse is a small rural village in Tasmania's Central Highlands, situated on the banks of the Ouse River at the junction of the Lyell Highway (A10) and Victoria Valley Road, approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Hamilton. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 326 residents spread across a vast locality of around 440 square kilometres, reflecting the open pastoral and agricultural character of the Central Highlands district. The area falls within the Central Highlands Council local government area, one of Tasmania's most sparsely populated and scenically dramatic regions.
The Lyell Highway — which links Hobart to Queenstown through Tasmania's rugged interior — passes directly through Ouse, giving the village a well-connected position for travellers and residents alike, with Hobart approximately 110 kilometres to the south-east. The community is small and self-contained, with a service station, hotel, and basic amenities catering to locals and highway travellers. Ouse appeals to those who value Tasmania's remote highland landscapes, including the nearby Meadowbank Lake and Derwent River valley walking country, alongside a genuinely quiet and unhurried country lifestyle.
Ouse falls under postcode 7140 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
