About Oxley Island
Oxley Island is a rural island locality in the Manning River delta on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, approximately 20 kilometres north-east of Taree. The island covers around 32 square kilometres and is home to approximately 321 residents, making it one of the more populated of the river islands in the Manning Valley. It is named in honour of the early colonial explorer John Oxley, who surveyed the Manning River region in 1818, and is administered by Mid-Coast Council.
The island is predominantly given over to dairy and beef cattle farming, taking advantage of the rich alluvial river flats. A tight-knit farming community calls Oxley Island home, with a community hall and primary school serving local families. Residents access the mainland via a vehicle punt across the Manning River, with Taree providing all major services including hospital, shopping, and secondary schooling. The peaceful river setting, wildlife, and waterway access make the island an appealing lifestyle destination for those seeking a rural coastal alternative.
Oxley Island falls under postcode 2430 and is governed by the Mid-Coast Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Lyne, while state elections fall under the Port Macquarie electorate.
