About Point Turton
Point Turton is a small coastal town situated on the eastern shore of Yorke Peninsula, approximately 114 kilometres west of Adelaide within the Yorke Peninsula Council area. Established in 1876, the town has a population of around 350 residents and covers roughly 22 square kilometres of coastal and rural land. With a median household income well below the South Australian average, Point Turton is primarily a holiday and retirement community, with many properties serving as beach houses for Adelaide families.
The town's historic jetty — originally built in 1876 to ship out locally quarried stone and barley — is today a popular fishing spot with sweeping views over Spencer Gulf. Flaherty Beach attracts visitors with its clear water and white sand, while the Walk the Yorke trail winds along the foreshore offering walking and cycling opportunities. Local amenities include the Point Turton General Store, the Tavern on Turton hotel, and a caravan park; the larger service town of Warooka is nearby for additional supplies. The Captain Harry Butler Memorial also commemorates the famous South Australian aviator who called the region home.
Point Turton falls under postcode 5575 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
