About Porongurup
Porongurup is a small rural locality in Western Australia's Great Southern region, centred on the world-class Porongurup National Park and its ancient granite peaks, approximately 360 kilometres south-east of Perth and 40 kilometres north of Albany. With a population of 342 spread across more than 213 square kilometres of national park, farmland, and native bush, the area is thinly settled but internationally recognised for its stunning natural landscape. The locality falls within the Shire of Plantagenet and Warren-Blackwood state electorate, with Albany serving as the primary regional service centre.
The Porongurup Range — one of the oldest granite massifs on Earth — defines the character of this locality, attracting hikers, rock climbers, and botanists drawn to its remarkable wildflower diversity and elevated walks through karri and marri forest. The area is also part of the Great Southern wine region, with a handful of acclaimed cool-climate wineries producing outstanding riesling, shiraz, and pinot noir. Despite its remoteness, Porongurup has a small but passionate community, and the nearby townships of Mount Barker and Albany provide comprehensive shopping, hospitals, and services.
Porongurup falls under postcode 6324 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
