About Ravenswood
Ravenswood is a small rural town and locality in the Charters Towers Region of Queensland, situated approximately 115 kilometres south-east of Townsville. The locality spans an extraordinary 3,262 square kilometres of inland Queensland, reflecting its remote station country character. With a population of around 297 residents, Ravenswood is one of Queensland’s most historically significant gold mining towns, sitting in a sparsely populated region of the state’s dry tropical interior.
Gold was discovered at Ravenswood in 1868 when Marmaduke Curr spotted alluvial gold in Elphinstone Creek while mustering cattle, sparking a rush that made the town one of Queensland’s most productive goldfields. Today, gold mining continues at the Ravenswood Gold mine, one of Queensland’s largest active gold operations. The town retains remarkable heritage streetscapes with Victorian-era buildings, and the Ravenswood Mining Landscape and Chinese Settlement Area is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Visitors are drawn by the historic character, outback scenery, and the town’s unique frontier atmosphere.
Ravenswood falls under postcode 4816 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
