About Reids Flat
Reids Flat is a small historic village in the Hilltops Council area of south-western New South Wales, situated on the south bank of the Lachlan River in the South West Slopes region. The locality covers a large rural area of approximately 177 square kilometres and is located around 40 kilometres south-east of Wyangala Dam and roughly 80 kilometres north of Young. With a 2021 Census population of 85 residents, Reids Flat is one of the most sparsely settled localities in the Hilltops region, and its character is defined by broad-acre farming, river flats, and wide open pastoral landscapes.
Reids Flat has a rich colonial history, with the area known for its association with bushrangers including Frank Gardiner and Jack Peisley during the 1860s gold-rush era. The village of Bigga, located approximately 22 kilometres away, serves as the nearest local service point for residents. An annual gymkhana and rodeo, held on the first Saturday of November, draws visitors and competitors from across the state and is a highlight of the local calendar. The nearest larger service town is Young, the self-proclaimed cherry capital of Australia, offering full shopping, schools, hospital, and rail connections.
Reids Flat falls under postcode 2586 and is governed by the Hilltops Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Riverina, while state elections fall under the Cootamundra electorate.
