About Southend
Southend is a small coastal locality on South Australia's Limestone Coast, situated on the southern shore of Rivoli Bay approximately 395 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and within the Wattle Range Council area. With a population of 301 people recorded in the 2021 Census, Southend is one of the Limestone Coast's oldest coastal settlements, historically known as Grey Town after Governor Grey when it was first established as a seaport around 1846. The locality covers approximately 37 square kilometres and attracts a mix of permanent residents and holiday visitors throughout the year.
Southend is both a working cray fishing port and a popular holiday destination, offering sandy beaches, coastal walks, and the relaxed atmosphere of a character-filled fishing village. The town's Italian fishing community has left a cultural mark, including a mosaic monument honouring the women of Southend's history. Nearby Beachport, approximately 15 minutes north, offers additional services and dining, while the broader Limestone Coast region includes the renowned Coonawarra wine country. Southend appeals to those seeking a peaceful coastal lifestyle away from larger urban centres.
Southend falls under postcode 5280 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mount Gambier electorate.
