About Staffordshire Reef
Staffordshire Reef is a small rural locality in Victoria's Golden Plains Shire, situated approximately 23 kilometres south-east of Ballarat. Covering around 19 square kilometres, the area recorded a population of 63 at the 2021 Census. The locality takes its name from a gold-bearing reef discovered around 1858, reportedly by miners from Staffordshire, England, and was once part of the Italian Gully goldfields — a site where more than 10 tonnes of gold was recovered from shallow workings during the Victorian gold rush era.
Today Staffordshire Reef is a quiet agricultural locality, with mixed farming and grazing replacing the intensive mining activity of the 19th century. Remnant diggings and the reef's historic gold mines are part of the locality's heritage landscape. Bannockburn serves as the nearest service centre in Golden Plains Shire, while Ballarat — approximately 23 kilometres to the north-west — provides a full regional city range of services, schools, and entertainment. The Goldfields Track passes through the wider region, connecting heritage sites across central Victoria.
Staffordshire Reef falls under postcode 3351 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
