About Stockwell
Stockwell is a small historic settlement in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia, located approximately 65 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, straddling the boundary of the Barossa Council and Light Regional Council local government areas. Named after early landowner Samuel Stockwell, the locality covers around 19 square kilometres of gently rolling farmland and recorded a population of 516 at the 2021 Census. Median household incomes are broadly in line with regional Barossa norms, reflecting a mixed community of farming families, agricultural workers, and lifestyle residents.
Stockwell sits at the heart of one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and the pastoral landscape of the Barossa hinterland. The nearby towns of Nuriootpa and Angaston are a short drive away, offering supermarkets, schools, cafes, and the famous Barossa Valley wine trail with its cellar doors and artisan producers. Stockwell formerly had a railway station on the Truro line, which operated from 1917 until closure in 1992, and today residents rely on private vehicles to access the Barossa's services and commute to Gawler or Adelaide.
Stockwell falls under postcode 5355 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
