About The Keppels
The Keppels is a small coastal locality in Central Queensland, situated in the waters near Rockhampton, encompassing the Keppel Islands group off the Capricorn Coast. The locality covers around 23 square kilometres and recorded a population of approximately 60 residents at the 2021 Census. The Keppel Islands, including Great Keppel Island, lie within the Southern Great Barrier Reef zone, offering pristine beaches, coral reefs, and clear tropical waters.
Yeppoon, on the mainland approximately 15 kilometres to the west, serves as the main service centre and gateway for the Keppel Islands, providing ferry connections, shops, a hospital, and schools. Great Keppel Island is a popular holiday destination known for its white sand beaches, snorkelling, and relaxed island resort atmosphere. The mainland Capricorn Coast provides all essential services for permanent residents.
