About Thornton
Thornton is a small riverside town nestled on the banks of the Goulburn River in the Shire of Murrindindi, in Victoria's central highlands. Located approximately 131 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, the town sits at an elevation of around 200 metres and lies roughly midway between the towns of Alexandra (17 km) and Eildon (13 km). With a population of 311, Thornton is a compact community covering around 70 square kilometres of lightly wooded valley terrain.
Thornton's economy is largely driven by tourism, owing to its proximity to Lake Eildon — one of Victoria's largest reservoirs and a major hub for boating, fishing, and camping. The town centre hosts a hotel, caravan park, and service station catering to visitors passing through on the way to Eildon. The Goulburn River and surrounding bushland offer attractive walking and fishing opportunities, making Thornton popular with weekenders and fishing enthusiasts escaping Melbourne.
Thornton falls under postcode 3712 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Eildon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
