About Togari
Togari is a sparsely populated rural locality in Tasmania's far north-west, situated approximately 30 kilometres south-west of Smithton within the Circular Head local government area. Covering a vast 244 square kilometres of remote bushland and farming country, the locality takes its name from an Aboriginal word believed to mean 'summit' or 'crown', and was formerly known as Montagu Swamp before being gazetted as Togari in 1965. With a 2021 Census population of just 92 residents spread across 24 dwellings, Togari is one of Tasmania's most thinly settled localities. The Arthur River forms much of the southern boundary and the Montagu River flows through from east to north-west, shaping the landscape of this remote corner of the state.
Togari's landscape is defined by its wide open wetlands, river flats, and surrounding bushland, drawing those who value solitude and a deep connection to nature. The locality has its roots in soldier settlement schemes and small-scale farming, and working rural properties remain the backbone of community life. There are no commercial amenities within Togari itself; residents rely on Smithton for groceries, health services, schools, and most daily needs. The area appeals to farmers, rural workers, and those seeking a genuinely remote lifestyle in one of Tasmania's lesser-known corners.
Togari falls under postcode 7330 and is governed by the Circular Head Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Braddon, while state elections fall under the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
