About Toolangi
Toolangi is a small bushland locality in Victoria's Yarra Ranges and Murrindindi Shire, situated approximately 73 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 21 kilometres north of Healesville. With a population of around 366 residents scattered across a 169 square kilometre area, the community sits at an elevation of 595 metres amid the tall forests and fern gullies of the Toolangi State Forest. The Taungurung word 'Toolangi' means stringybark, reflecting the ancient mountain ash and stringybark forests that define the landscape.
Toolangi has a rich history as a timber-cutting community dating to the 1860s and is celebrated as the former home of beloved Australian poet C.J. Dennis, who created 'The Sentimental Bloke' while living in the area. The locality receives over 1,350 mm of rainfall annually, creating a lush, green environment popular with nature lovers, bushwalkers, and tree changers from Melbourne. Residents embrace a connected bushland lifestyle, with Healesville and its wildlife sanctuary a short drive south and the broader Yarra Valley wine region close at hand.
Toolangi falls under postcode 3777 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Eildon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
