About Toonpan
Toonpan is a small rural locality in the City of Townsville, situated approximately 27 kilometres south of Townsville's CBD on the outskirts of the city's rural fringe. Covering around 12.7 square kilometres, the area recorded a population of 62 at the 2021 Census. The locality is bounded to the west by the Mount Isa railway line and the Flinders Highway, with terrain rising from open plains to the forested foothills of Mount Elliot in the east.
Toonpan provides a semi-rural lifestyle on Townsville's southern edge, with land use predominantly grazing on native vegetation and a small amount of cropping. The locality benefits from its proximity to Townsville — North Queensland's largest city — which provides comprehensive services including James Cook University, major hospitals, shopping centres, and Townsville Airport. The Great Northern railway line, opened in 1880, originally passed through the Toonpan locality en route from Townsville south through the Flinders region.
Toonpan falls under postcode 4816 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
