About Tumut

Often called the 'gateway to the Snowy Mountains', it sits at 305 metres elevation on the north-western foothills of the Snowy Mountains, within Snowy Valleys Council. The town retains a wealth of 19th-century architecture, including an Anglican church designed by colonial architect Edmund Blacket and a courthouse by James Barnet. The surrounding landscape is framed by European deciduous trees introduced by early settlers, making autumn a particularly spectacular season.

The Tumut River and nearby national parks provide excellent opportunities for fishing, bushwalking, and camping, drawing visitors year-round. The area is known for timber production and agriculture, with many residents employed in these industries or commuting to nearby regional centres. With affordable housing, good schools, and natural beauty on the doorstep, Tumut appeals to families, retirees, and those seeking a quieter pace of life.
