About Tumut
Tumut is a historic town of around 6,600 people situated on the banks of the Tumut River in the Snowy Valleys region of southern New South Wales, approximately 410 kilometres south-west of Sydney. Often called the 'gateway to the Snowy Mountains', it sits at 305 metres elevation on the north-western foothills of the Snowy Mountains, within Snowy Valleys Council. The town retains a wealth of 19th-century architecture, including an Anglican church designed by colonial architect Edmund Blacket and a courthouse by James Barnet. The surrounding landscape is framed by European deciduous trees introduced by early settlers, making autumn a particularly spectacular season.
Tumut offers a relaxed country-town lifestyle with a strong sense of community and solid local amenities including a Coles and Woolworths, medical services, and a range of local schools. The Tumut River and nearby national parks provide excellent opportunities for fishing, bushwalking, and camping, drawing visitors year-round. The area is known for timber production and agriculture, with many residents employed in these industries or commuting to nearby regional centres. With affordable housing, good schools, and natural beauty on the doorstep, Tumut appeals to families, retirees, and those seeking a quieter pace of life.
Tumut falls under postcode 2720 and is governed by Snowy Valleys Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wagga Wagga electorate.
