Upper Scamander is a small rural locality on the east coast of Tasmania, situated approximately 130 kilometres north of Hobart near the town of St Helens in the Break O'Day municipality. The locality covers around 98 square kilometres and recorded a population of approximately 60 residents at the 2021 Census. The area lies in the Scamander River valley, featuring tall timber forests, cleared farmland, and scenic coastal hinterland typical of north-eastern Tasmania.
St Helens, approximately 15 kilometres to the north-east, is the main service centre for the Break O'Day district providing shops, schools, medical services, and is a popular fishing and holiday town on Georges Bay. The broader region is known for its pristine rivers, excellent trout fishing, scenic coastal drives, and the Bay of Fires coastal reserve. A private vehicle is essential as no public transport serves the locality.
