About Venus Bay
Venus Bay is a seaside township on the east coast of Victoria's South Gippsland, situated approximately 173 kilometres south-east of Melbourne within the South Gippsland Shire local government area. The township is built on a narrow peninsula with the bay on its western shore and Anderson's Inlet — a sheltered estuary — on its eastern side, covering around 17 square kilometres. With a 2021 Census population of 904, Venus Bay is primarily a coastal holiday community with a small permanent resident base, named after the bay first charted by French explorer Nicolas Baudin in the early 1800s.
Venus Bay is renowned for its five surf beaches — numbered Beach 1 through 5 — offering excellent fishing, surfing, and swimming along an unspoilt South Gippsland coastline largely free of commercial development. Anderson's Inlet provides calm waters for kayaking, birdwatching, and estuarine fishing, while the surrounding national park and coastal reserve add to the area's natural appeal. With no town centre of its own, residents rely on nearby Inverloch or Wonthaggi for shopping and services, making Venus Bay best suited to those who embrace a slow, self-sufficient coastal lifestyle far from the city rush.
Venus Bay falls under postcode 3956 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland South (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
