About Wandering
Wandering is a small agricultural town in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, located approximately 120 kilometres south-east of Perth along the Albany Highway within the Shire of Wandering. With a population of around 391 residents spread across a large locality of 330 square kilometres, it is a quiet rural community characterised by farmland, open paddocks, and the wandoo eucalypt woodland that gave the town its name. The area sits at an elevation of approximately 294 metres above sea level and enjoys a temperate climate typical of the Wheatbelt.
The local economy is centred on broad-acre farming and grazing, with the surrounding district supporting grain growers and livestock producers. The Wandering Agricultural Hall is a community hub, and the iconic 'The Horses Came First' statue pays tribute to the area's settlement history, recalling how the first European settlers arrived in 1859 by following their straying wagon horses to a freshwater spring. Residents rely on private transport for most daily needs, with Narrogin and Armadale providing larger shopping, medical, and government services.
Wandering falls under postcode 6308 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
