About Wangi Wangi

Wangi Wangi is a picturesque peninsula suburb jutting into Lake Macquarie, located approximately 35 kilometres southwest of Newcastle and 133 kilometres north of Sydney. With a population of around 2,900 residents, the suburb has an Aboriginal name meaning either 'Water Water', 'many night owls', or 'many trees'. The area has been a popular holiday destination since the early coalfields era, originally accessible only by ferry. The Awabakal people are the traditional custodians of this land.

The suburb is renowned for its stunning waterfront views, excellent fishing spots, and bushwalking tracks including historic WWII gun emplacements. Wangi Wangi is famously associated with artist Sir William Dobell, whose lakeside home and studio (Dobell House) is now a museum. The heritage-listed Wangi Power Station operated from 1956 to 1986. Residents enjoy a relaxed village atmosphere with local shops, cafes, a supermarket, medical centre, and Dobell Park offering scenic lakefront picnic areas and playgrounds.

Wangi Wangi falls under postcode 2267 and is governed by Lake Macquarie Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lake Macquarie electorate.
