About Warrak

Warrak is a small rural locality in the Ararat Rural City Council local government area of western Victoria, situated approximately 10 kilometres south-east of Ararat in a scenic valley beneath Mount Cole State Forest. The locality covers approximately 68 square kilometres of mixed farming and forested country, set in the rural corridor between the Grampians National Park to the west and Mount Langi Ghiran to the south-east. Historical sawmills that supplied timber to the Ballarat goldfields operated in the Warrak area during the 1860s, giving the locality a deep connection to Victoria's colonial history.

Today Warrak is celebrated as a destination for wine and nature lovers — a scenic touring route from Buangor through Warrak to Ararat passes two boutique wineries with sweeping views of the Ararat Wind Farm and surrounding ranges. Mount Cole State Forest provides walking trails and wildlife encounters, while the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, one of Victoria's most spectacular natural attractions, is within easy reach. Ararat serves as the main service centre and is home to the Great Western wine region and historic J Ward Aradale Mental Asylum. The Western Highway connects the area to Ballarat and Melbourne to the east.

Warrak falls under postcode 3377 and is governed by the Ararat Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Wannon, while state elections fall under the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
