About Warruwi
Warruwi is a remote Aboriginal community located on South Goulburn Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land in the West Arnhem Region of the Northern Territory. The community sits approximately 290 kilometres north-east of Darwin and 100 kilometres north-east of Jabiru, accessible only by air or sea. With a population of 432 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, Warruwi is a tight-knit community where social housing accounts for the majority of dwellings, reflecting its status as a remote Indigenous community.
The traditional owners of the Goulburn Islands have a deep and continuing connection to this land and sea country. The community is served by a school, a health clinic, and an arts centre, supporting residents on the island. FlyTiwi operates a daily passenger flight to Darwin, while a weekly barge service handles freight. The surrounding seas and tropical landscape of Arnhem Land provide a striking environment, but island life means all essential goods and services are brought in from the mainland.
Warruwi falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
