About Wattle Flat
Wattle Flat is a historic locality in the Bathurst Regional Council area of New South Wales, situated approximately 33 kilometres north-east of Bathurst in the Central Tablelands. Covering around 58 square kilometres near the confluence of Big Oaky Creek and Solitary Creek, the locality had a 2021 Census population of 270 residents and carries a rich gold rush heritage. Wattle Flat falls within the state electorate of Orange and the federal electorate of Calare, which covers much of the Central West.
Wattle Flat was once one of the most significant gold rush settlements in the region, with records suggesting up to 40,000 people at its peak during the mid-1800s gold rush era. Today the small village retains its historical character as a quiet rural community, serving as a stopping point for travellers heading north towards Sofala and Hill End — two of New South Wales' most celebrated historic gold rush towns. The surrounding landscape features the rolling hills, granite outcrops, and pastoral land typical of the Central Tablelands, with Bathurst providing all essential services, schools, and regional amenities within easy driving distance.
Wattle Flat falls under postcode 2795 and is governed by the Bathurst Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Calare, while state elections fall under the Orange electorate.
