About Wellingrove

Wellingrove is a small historic rural locality in the Glen Innes Severn local government area, situated in the New England region of New South Wales approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Glen Innes. Once one of the principal settlements of the northern New England district, Wellingrove was gazetted as a town in 1852 before the shift of the court of petty sessions to Glen Innes in 1858 led to its gradual decline. The locality now covers an expansive 366 square kilometres of upland tableland at over 1,000 metres elevation, used predominantly for grazing and agriculture. The 2021 census recorded just 95 residents, making it one of the most sparsely populated localities in New South Wales.

Wellingrove's vast grazing lands support sheep and cattle farming, with properties typically running to hundreds of hectares across the high New England plateau. The surrounding landscape is characterised by open pastures, granite outcrops and cool-climate conditions, with cold winters and occasional snowfall. Glen Innes provides the nearest town services including shops, schools, a hospital and the historic Land of the Beardies precinct celebrating the region's Celtic heritage. The New England Highway passes through the broader district, connecting Glen Innes to Armidale to the south and Tenterfield to the north.

Wellingrove falls under postcode 2370 and is governed by the Glen Innes Severn Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Page, while state elections fall under the Northern Tablelands electorate.
