About Willyaroo
Willyaroo is a small rural locality situated on the south-eastern outskirts of Strathalbyn in South Australia's Alexandrina Council area, approximately 60 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. With a 2021 Census population of 376, the locality spans a compact 3.9 square kilometres and is crossed by the River Angas. Originally known as New Hamburg, the name was changed to Willyaroo in 1916 — believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'to invoke a good harvest.'
Willyaroo functions as an outer residential fringe of Strathalbyn, a historic heritage town on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Residents enjoy proximity to Strathalbyn's town centre, which offers supermarkets, local shops, cafes, and community facilities. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Fleurieu region — gently rolling hills, grazing paddocks, and the leafy course of the River Angas — making it a quietly appealing semi-rural address within easy reach of Adelaide.
Willyaroo falls under postcode 5255 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
