About Wilpinjong
Wilpinjong is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Mid-Western Regional area of New South Wales, situated approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Mudgee. The locality covers over 51 square kilometres of open pastoral and mining land in the NSW western coalfields. It is most widely known as the site of the Wilpinjong Coal Mine, operated by Peabody Energy, one of Australia's largest and lowest-cost open-cut thermal coal operations and a significant regional employer. The surrounding landscape is characterised by dry eucalypt woodland and agricultural grazing land.
The Wilpinjong area has a very small resident population and minimal community infrastructure, with residents relying on Mudgee for all services, shopping, and healthcare. Mudgee, around 40 km to the south-west, is a thriving regional centre renowned for its wine, food and arts scene. The Mid-Western region offers a relaxed country lifestyle, with the coal mine providing significant local employment. For those not connected to the mining industry, the region attracts hobby farmers and rural lifestyle residents drawn to affordable acreage close to Mudgee's amenities.
Wilpinjong falls under postcode 2850 and is governed by the Mid-Western Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Calare, while state elections fall under the Upper Hunter electorate.
