About Windeyer
Windeyer is a small rural locality in the Mid-Western Regional Council area of New South Wales, situated approximately 30 kilometres north-west of Mudgee in the Central West of NSW, and around 270 kilometres north-west of Sydney. With a population of 187 across around 85 dwellings spread over nearly 169 square kilometres, it is one of the region's most historically significant localities, having been a major gold mining centre during the 1850s gold rushes. At its peak, Windeyer was a bustling township with dozens of hotels and thousands of residents; today it has quietened considerably to become what some describe as a near ghost town.
The locality retains a rich colonial history and heritage character, with the surrounding countryside characterised by open grazing land, timber properties, and the gentle hills of the Central West. Mudgee — approximately 30 kilometres to the south-east — provides access to the region's well-regarded wine industry, schools, medical services, shopping, and a vibrant food and café scene. Windeyer appeals to those seeking an affordable, rural lifestyle steeped in Australian gold rush history, within easy reach of the Mudgee wine region's many attractions.
Windeyer falls under postcode 2850 and is governed by the Mid-Western Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Calare, while state elections fall under the Upper Hunter electorate.
