About Wingfield
Wingfield is a predominantly industrial suburb located approximately 8 kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD, within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield local government area. Established in 1877 and named after R. W. Wingfield, private secretary to South Australian Governor William Jervois, the suburb has grown into a key industrial and logistics hub for metropolitan Adelaide. With a 2021 Census population of 440, a small residential pocket sits in the suburb's south-western corner while the majority of the area is dedicated to commercial and industrial activity.
Wingfield hosts a concentration of recycling, manufacturing, and freight forwarding operations, most notably the Wingfield Waste and Recycling Centre — a 94-hectare facility that has operated as a resource recovery hub since 2004. The suburb is well-connected by major arterial roads including the Port River Expressway, Grand Junction Road, and the North-South Motorway, making it an important logistics node for South Australia. Of local interest is Sidewinders Speedway on Eighth Street, recognised as Australia's only dedicated junior motorcycle speedway track. Freight rail corridors, including the Gawler Line and the Dry Creek–Port Adelaide railway, form part of the suburb's boundaries.
Wingfield falls under postcode 5013 and is governed by City of Port Adelaide Enfield Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Port Adelaide electorate.
