About Woodside
Woodside is a small rural locality in the Shire of Wellington, East Gippsland, Victoria, situated approximately 226 kilometres east of Melbourne and 22 kilometres east of Yarram on the South Gippsland coast. At the 2021 Census, the locality had a population of 374 across a large 261 square kilometres of coastal farmland and bushland near the Ninety Mile Beach. The area is notably the namesake of Woodside Energy, one of Australia's largest oil and gas companies, which took its name from this coastal district.
Woodside is perhaps best known locally for Woodside Beach, a long stretch of remote ocean beach backed by coastal dunes forming part of the Ninety Mile Beach. The Woodside Beach Hotel, reopened in 2022 after a lengthy closure, serves as the social hub of the community. The locality has a strong rural and coastal character, attracting holiday-makers, anglers, and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts drawn to the wild and relatively undeveloped coastline. Yarram provides the nearest substantial services, while Sale (68km west) and Traralgon offer larger retail and employment centres in the broader region.
Woodside falls under postcode 3874 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland South (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
