About Woondum
Woondum is a small rural locality in the Gympie Region of south-east Queensland, situated within the Gympie Regional Council area to the south-west of Gympie town, approximately 170 kilometres north of Brisbane. The locality covers around 10.7 square kilometres and had a 2021 census population of 66 residents. The name Woondum is believed to derive from the Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) language, with "wun" meaning blue-tongue lizard and "dan" meaning place. The western part of the locality is mountainous and largely undeveloped, covered by the Woondum State Forest which was established in 1929 rather than being opened up for farming.
Woondum's character is defined by its hinterland bush setting, with the Woondum State Forest providing a backdrop of native eucalypt forest and wildlife to the modest collection of rural lifestyle properties in the locality. Gympie, the regional centre and historically significant gold rush town, lies to the north-east and provides the full range of services including supermarkets, schools, a hospital, and rail connections south to Brisbane on the North Coast line. The broader Gympie Region is known for its gold-rush heritage, the Mary River valley, and a growing community of tree changers drawn to the Noosa Hinterland surrounds. Woondum suits those seeking a bush lifestyle property close to Gympie's amenities.
Woondum falls under postcode 4570 and is governed by the Gympie Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Longman, while state elections fall under the Nanango electorate.
