About Wooragee
Wooragee is a small rural locality in the foothills of north-east Victoria, situated approximately 8 kilometres south of Beechworth and around 290 kilometres north-east of Melbourne within the Indigo Shire Council area. With a population of 342 spread across nearly 92 square kilometres of gently undulating farmland and bushland, it is a lightly settled district with a distinctly agricultural character. The area falls within the Ovens Valley region, known for its scenic beauty, cool climate produce, and proximity to the Victorian Alps foothills.
Wooragee residents enjoy easy access to Beechworth, one of Victoria's best-preserved historic gold rush towns, which offers a vibrant café scene, boutique shops, the famous Beechworth Bakery, and a range of heritage sites. The surrounding region is renowned for cool-climate wines, cycling trails, and proximity to Yeddonba Aboriginal Cultural Landscape and the Mount Buffalo and Alpine national parks. While Wooragee itself is quiet and car-dependent, its location in north-east Victoria's most scenic and food-rich corridor makes it a sought-after semi-rural retreat.
Wooragee falls under postcode 3747 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
