About Wyaga
Wyaga is a vast rural locality in Queensland's Goondiwindi Region, situated in the Southern Downs approximately 30 kilometres north-west of Goondiwindi. Covering around 643 square kilometres of predominantly flat agricultural land, the locality is extremely sparsely settled, with just 77 residents recorded in the 2021 Census. The area was named after an early pastoral run in the district, established in the late 1840s by David Perrier, reflecting its long history as grazing and farming country.
The Gore Highway passes through the locality, providing the main road connection between Goondiwindi and Warwick to the north. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Darling Downs and border country — broad, open farmland used for cropping and cattle grazing. Residents rely entirely on private vehicles for daily needs, travelling to Goondiwindi for shopping, services, and schooling. Wyaga typifies the quiet, self-sufficient lifestyle of Queensland's agricultural interior.
Wyaga falls under postcode 4390 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
