About Yalata
Yalata is a remote Aboriginal community located on the far west coast of South Australia, approximately 200 kilometres west of Ceduna on the edge of the Nullarbor Plain. The community sits on the traditional lands of the Anangu people and covers an extraordinarily vast area of around 5,756 square kilometres across the Nullarbor and surrounding coastal country. With a population of 313, Yalata is one of South Australia's most remote inhabited localities, governed under the Far West of SA region.
Yalata is administered by the Yalata Community Inc. and functions as an Indigenous Protected Area, with residents engaged in land management, cultural activities, fishing, and hunting across their traditional country. The Yalata Roadhouse on the Eyre Highway serves as a key stop for travellers crossing the Nullarbor, offering fuel, food, and accommodation. The nearby Head of Bight — around 25 kilometres away — is renowned as one of Australia's best whale watching sites, drawing visitors from across the country between June and October.
Yalata falls under postcode 5690 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
