About Yanga
Yanga is an expansive, sparsely populated locality in the Murray region of far south-western New South Wales, situated near the town of Balranald on the Murrumbidgee River. Covering an extraordinary 536 square kilometres of floodplain, wetlands, and semi-arid plains, the locality recorded just 5 permanent residents in the 2021 Census. Much of the area falls within Yanga National Park, a protected conservation area managed by NSW National Parks. The locality sits within Balranald Shire, the federal electorate of Farrer, and the state electorate of Murray.
Yanga National Park is the centrepiece of this remote locality, offering outstanding fishing along the Murrumbidgee River, free campgrounds, and exceptional birdwatching around Yanga Lake — a significant wetland system supporting hundreds of waterbird species. The park preserves both the natural and cultural heritage of the Barkandji (Paakantyi) people, who have deep connections to this land and its waterways. Visitors enjoy the solitude of the outback, night skies undimmed by light pollution, and encounters with kangaroos, emus, and diverse river wildlife. The township of Balranald, about 10 kilometres away, provides the nearest services including fuel, food, and accommodation.
Yanga falls under postcode 2711 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
