About Yangan
Yangan is a small rural town and locality in Queensland's Southern Downs Region, located approximately 19.5 kilometres east of Warwick and 161 kilometres south-west of Brisbane in the Darling Downs. The locality covers around 40.7 square kilometres, traversed by Swan Creek, a tributary of the Condamine River, and sits within the Southern Downs Regional Council area. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 404, spread at a low density across agricultural and grazing land.
Yangan's economy is primarily based on crop growing, cattle grazing, and sandstone quarrying on the southern outskirts of the town. The district was originally known as Upper Swan Creek and took the name Yangan — reportedly an Aboriginal word meaning 'proceed' — from its railway station in 1887; the Killarney railway line has since closed. The historic Yangan School of Arts building and Yangan State School, which opened in 1874, remain community landmarks. There is no public transport service; Warwick, approximately 20 minutes' drive west, provides the nearest supermarkets, hospital, and services. A car is essential for all daily needs.
Yangan falls under postcode 4371 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
