About Yaninee
Yaninee is a small township on the Eyre Highway in central Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, situated approximately 21 kilometres west of Wudinna within the Wudinna District Council area. With a 2021 Census population of 66 residents across a large locality of nearly 482 square kilometres, it is one of the most sparsely settled localities on the peninsula. Originally established by farming families in the late 19th century, Yaninee is set amid the cereal cropping and pastoral country characteristic of the Eyre Peninsula's inland plains.
Yaninee retains several heritage structures from its farming community past, including the Yaninee Institute (established 1925), which has served over the decades as a meeting place, school, church, and community hall and remains one of the oldest buildings in the district. The town also has a Lutheran church, netball and tennis courts, and a football oval that still hosts regional games. The Eyre Highway provides direct road connections to Wudinna and onwards to Port Augusta and Adelaide, and Stateliner regional coaches travel this corridor. Yaninee suits those who value a quiet outback lifestyle, wide open cereal farming landscapes, and a genuine connection to Eyre Peninsula heritage.
Yaninee falls under postcode 5653 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
