About Yarrabin
Yarrabin is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Central West of New South Wales, situated approximately 37 kilometres west of Mudgee within the Mid-Western Regional Council area. Formerly known as Merrendee, the locality was established after the discovery of gold in the region around 1851 near the junction of the Meroo and Cudgegong rivers. With a population of just 96 residents across a vast 312 square kilometres in the 2021 Census, Yarrabin remains one of the most thinly settled areas in the Mid-Western region.
The locality has a rich gold-rush heritage, with the original village of Merrendee once serving as a staging point for miners heading to the surrounding goldfields. Australian tennis champion Vivian McGrath was born at the Merrendee Hotel in 1916. Today, Yarrabin is predominantly grazing country, with large rural properties along Yarrabin Road offering bushland, creek frontage, and pastoral farmland. The nearest services and schools are in the town of Mudgee, which also provides access to the region's renowned wineries, restaurants, and weekend markets.
Yarrabin falls under postcode 2850 and is governed by Mid-Western Regional Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Upper Hunter electorate.
