About Yongala
Yongala is a small rural locality in South Australia's Mid North region, situated approximately 238 kilometres north of Adelaide along the Clare-Peterborough Road (B79), at an elevation of around 521 metres on a broad plateau. The locality falls within the Peterborough Council area and covers approximately 18.9 square kilometres of open agricultural land in the southern Flinders Ranges foothills. With a recorded 2021 census population of 67 residents, Yongala is a quiet, established community whose name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal phrase meaning "good water place." The area experienced early European settlement from the 1870s and was once a thriving township of over 350 people before the railway bypassed the town in favour of nearby Peterborough.
Today Yongala retains a peaceful, historic character with heritage buildings, open farmland, and sweeping views across the surrounding district. The town was proclaimed in 1876 and its century-old streetscapes reflect its origins as a farming and pastoral service centre. Residents rely on Peterborough, approximately 35 kilometres to the north, for shopping, medical services, and secondary schooling. The locality is best suited to those seeking a quiet semi-rural lifestyle in the Mid North with easy access to the Flinders Ranges and the region's scenic outback landscapes.
Yongala falls under postcode 5493 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
