About Yunta
Yunta is a small outback locality in the Far North region of South Australia, situated approximately 400 kilometres north-east of Adelaide on the Barrier Highway near the NSW border. The locality covers an enormous 1,601 square kilometres of arid mulga country and recorded a population of approximately 60 residents at the 2021 Census. It is a remote outback service point on the Barrier Highway for travellers heading to Broken Hill and beyond.
Yunta has a small general store, roadhouse, and limited facilities catering to travellers and the sparse local farming community. Broken Hill in NSW is approximately 100 kilometres to the east, while Peterborough, roughly 120 kilometres to the west, provides the nearest comprehensive services in SA. The surrounding arid landscape of Barrier Ranges saltbush country is classic South Australian outback. A private vehicle is the only practical transport.
Yunta falls under postcode 5440 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
