About Berriedale

Berriedale is a residential suburb in northern Hobart, situated approximately 15 kilometres from the city centre within the City of Glenorchy. With a growing population of around 2,900, the suburb sits on the banks of the Derwent River between Chigwell and Rosetta. The area's origins trace to 1834 when the Berriedale Inn was established as a travellers' hub, becoming a focal point for the early community.

Berriedale is internationally renowned as home to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Tasmania's most visited tourist attraction, along with the historic Moorilla Estate winery established in 1947. The suburb offers scenic river views and is bisected by the Brooker Highway, creating distinct eastern (riverside) and western neighbourhoods. Housing predominantly features mid-20th century homes from Tasmania's post-war boom, with weatherboard and brick constructions surrounded by spacious gardens. MONA has transformed the suburb's profile, hosting major festivals including the winter Dark Mofo event.

Berriedale falls under postcode 7011 and is governed by Glenorchy Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Clark (Elwick) electorate.
