About Bingil Bay
Bingil Bay is a small coastal town and locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Queensland, situated along the shores of the Coral Sea approximately 6.8 kilometres north-north-west of Mission Beach and 137 kilometres south of Cairns. The locality covers around 4.7 square kilometres and recorded a population of 438 at the 2021 Census, forming part of the wider Mission Beach coastal cluster that includes Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach. Below-average median incomes reflect the area's appeal as a lifestyle and sea-change destination rather than an employment hub.
Bingil Bay is renowned for its pristine, uncrowded beach framed by World Heritage–listed tropical rainforest, with views out to Dunk Island and the Family Islands group offshore. The area is part of the globally recognised Wet Tropics bioregion, and the resident population of endangered southern cassowaries in the surrounding rainforest makes this stretch of the Cassowary Coast uniquely biodiverse. The community has a strong conservation ethic, and while local amenities are limited, Mission Beach township is only a short drive south and provides cafes, supermarkets, and visitor services.
Bingil Bay falls under postcode 4852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hinchinbrook electorate.
