About Blakney Creek
Blakney Creek is a small rural locality in the Upper Lachlan Shire in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, situated approximately 30 kilometres north of Yass and around 85 kilometres north of Canberra. The locality covers 181 square kilometres of open grazing and mixed farming country on the south-western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 92 residents across around 31 dwellings, giving the area a very sparse settlement character typical of this inland pastoral region.
The area is named after Blakney Creek, a mostly perennial river that forms part of the Lachlan sub-catchment of the Murrumbidgee catchment within the Murray-Darling Basin. The locality is known for its secure rainfall and history of supporting cattle and sheep enterprises across large grazing properties. Yass, the nearest town with services including shops, schools, and a hospital, is approximately 30 kilometres to the south. The regional city of Goulburn lies around 77 kilometres to the east, while Canberra is within a comfortable 45 to 55 minute drive to the south, making the area attractive to those seeking a rural property with capital city accessibility.
Blakney Creek falls under postcode 2581 and is governed by the Upper Lachlan Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Hume, while state elections fall under the Monaro electorate.
