About Cape Barren Island
Cape Barren Island is a remote island locality in the Furneaux Group of the Bass Strait, situated between Flinders Island and the north-eastern tip of mainland Tasmania, approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Whitemark (Flinders Island). Covering around 580 square kilometres, it is the second-largest island in the Furneaux Group and is home to a small, predominantly Aboriginal community with deep connections to the Palawa people of Tasmania. With a population of around 64 residents, Cape Barren Island is one of the most isolated inhabited localities in Tasmania.
The Cape Barren Island Aboriginal community maintains a strong cultural connection to country, with the island's grasslands, wetlands, and coastal heath supporting diverse wildlife including Cape Barren geese — a species found almost nowhere else in the world. The island is accessible by light plane or boat, with basic community facilities including a school, community centre, and general store. Life on Cape Barren Island is defined by the remote island lifestyle, the strong Aboriginal cultural heritage, and the natural beauty of the Bass Strait environment.
Cape Barren Island falls under postcode 7257 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
